10 Essential Tips for Magnet Fishing

Become a Magnet Fishing Legend with These 10 Tips

Magnet fishing is one of those hobbies where anything could be anywhere.
That’s the thrill! You throw a magnet into the water, and you never know what you’re pulling up next.

Whether you’re just getting started or you’ve already spent a few muddy mornings at the waterfront, these 10 tips will help you fish smarter, safer, and with way more fun. We’ve learned all of this from years of adventures with Bondi Treasure Hunter, and now we’re sharing it so you can get the most out of your own treasure hunts.

Magnets away!

1. Choose a magnet that fits you

Here’s the thing: stronger isn’t always better.

We only sell 360° neodymium magnets, and they’re specially designed for magnet fishing. So whichever size you pick, you can’t go wrong, but choosing the right size makes the whole experience much more fun.

Think about:

  • Your strength level

  • What kinds of things you’d like to pull up

  • Whether you’re new or experienced

Your magnet should match your adventure style, not overpower it. Start where you feel confident, and level up as you get hooked (trust us… you will).

Check out our “Which Magnet Should I Choose?” guide, it tells you everything about our different magnet sizes.

2. Use a proper magnet fishing rope

Not all ropes are created equal.

The Bondi Magnets Rope is:

  • Non-stretch

  • Water-repellent

  • High-quality nylon

  • Equipped with extra-tough stainless steel carabiners on both ends

  • Designed with a loop on one end for a no-knot magnet attachment, and a stainless steel connector for the carabiner on the other

This makes it safer, easier to use, and perfect for heavy finds. A bad rope can ruin your day and send your magnet straight to the bottom forever. Ours is made to last through every adventure.

3. Always wear gloves (always!)

We always say this because it’s true: wear gloves every single time you go magnet fishing.

Rusty sharp objects, muddy finds, rope burns… gloves protect your hands.
Our waterproof gloves give grip, protection, and keep your fingers safe and warm.

This one’s non-negotiable.

4. Explore different locations

Magnet fishing is all about curiosity.

Try:

  • Bridges

  • Canals

  • Busy city centres and walkways

  • Historical areas

  • Old trade routes

  • Lakes and small towns

  • Places where someone could've dumped something

Bondi Treasure Hunter’s favourite rule: anything could be anywhere.
Throw your magnet in surprising places and you’ll be surprised by your catches! Just make sure magnet fishing is allowed in that location.

5. Slow pulls find the treasure

Don’t yank your rope. Instead, make slow, steady pulls along the bottom.
This helps your magnet “catch” metal objects instead of skipping over them.

Check out our guide: 4 Magnet Fishing Techniques Every Beginner Should Know.

6. Bring a grappling hook, you won’t regret it

Our stainless steel grappling hook is one of the most underrated tools in magnet fishing.

Use it when:

  • You’ve hooked something big but non-magnetic

  • Your magnet keeps slipping on those awkward finds

  • You’ve got a bike or a safe and need extra pulling power

  • You want more control underwater

It’s the difference between “almost got it” and “OHHH MY GOD LOOK WHAT I FOUND!”

Add a Grappling Hook to your setup, you’ll thank yourself later.

7. Keep it safe

It’s an adventure, but we want you to come home safe.

  • Only explore areas that are safe

  • Don’t go too close to slippery edges

  • Never attach the rope to yourself

  • Keep magnets away from metal surfaces and other magnets

  • If you find something dangerous (weapons, ammo, strange objects), leave it and call the police

  • Wear gloves every time

  • Store your grappling hook safely, preferably in your bucket, as the hooks are sharp

Safety = more fun long-term.

8. Think like a treasure hunter

Magnet fishing isn’t just “throw and pull”, it’s about reading the environment.

Ask yourself:

  • Where would someone have thrown something?

  • What are the busiest areas?

  • Where do boats load and unload?

  • Was this a special area in history?

Fish like a treasure hunter, that’s how you find the cool stuff.

9. Make it easy for yourself

A few things make your day smoother:

  • Bring a bucket for small finds and cleanup

  • Wear clothes that can get dirty

  • Bring water and snacks

  • Don’t fish alone, it’s safer and more fun to bring a friend

And the easiest of all?
Start with a Complete Magnet Fishing Kit, it has everything you need, ready to go.

10. Enjoy the thrill of the unknown

This hobby is about adventure, nature, sustainability, and the excitement of “What’s down there?”

You’re cleaning waterways…
You’re getting outside…
You could find real treasure…
And you’re joining a community that loves the thrill just as much as you do.

Keep learning, keep exploring, and keep having fun out there.
That’s what magnet fishing is all about.
