What is magnet fishing?

As the name suggests, magnet fishing is fishing with a magnet. However, a magnet fisherman does not fish for fish but for metal. What do you need? Mainly a good fishing magnet and a sturdy rope. Tie the magnet securely to the rope, throw it into the water, then pull the rope and see what the magnet grabbed.

What is a magnet fishing magnet?

Fishing magnets are magnetic on all sides, not just one or two. One- and two-sided magnets are significantly weaker and not made for magnet fishing, even if they are advertised as such. To enjoy the hobby and actually find treasure, get the right magnet.

What can you catch?

Anything made of magnetic metal and many things tangled in or hidden inside metal. Coins, bicycles, motorbikes, firearms, even safes. People have found jewellery and gemstones in safes they fished up—anything is possible.

Can you magnet fish with any magnet?

Yes and no. Any strong magnet could be used, but your success will be lower. For effective magnet fishing, you want a heavy, powerful 360º neodymium magnet that pulls on all sides. All Bondi Magnets are 360º neodymium magnets made especially for magnet fishing.

Which magnet is best for me?

We offer a range for all levels: The Nugget (beginner), The Jackpot (all-round), The Bondi Gold (Bondi’s choice), The El Dorado (heavy-duty), The Holy Moly (extreme—only for highly experienced fishers). A Magnet Quiz is coming to help you choose.

Why should I get a Bondi Magnet instead of a cheaper one?

Magnet fishing magnets are specific. Many cheap ‘fishing magnets’ are just normal magnets and disappoint. Bondi Magnets are designed for magnet fishing and tested by Bondi Treasure Hunter, so you get a genuine magnet fishing magnet at a fair price.

What is a 360º neodymium magnet?

A magnet that pulls on all sides and uses neodymium, a rare-earth metal. It gives a strong, consistent pulling force that doesn’t weaken over time. Perfect for magnet fishing.

Which magnet is the strongest one?

All Bondi Magnets are strong. The Holy Moly is the most extreme magnet for magnet fishing—only for highly experienced magnet fishers. Stronger isn’t always better.

Is stronger always better?

Not always. Stronger magnets pull more but can also stick to large metal you don’t want. Around big metal or unknown waters, start smaller and work up. The Jackpot is a good all-rounder for adults beginning the hobby.

What does 'combined pull' mean?

Direct pulling force is on one side of the magnet. 360º magnets pull on all sides, so combined pulling force sums all sides and is the best indicator of strength.

What does the amount of kg / lbs magnetic strength mean?

It’s measured in lab conditions with all sides combined. In real life, mud, rust, and partial contact reduce that. Higher advertised strength improves your chances of pulling heavier items.

Do I really need a grappling hook?

You can fish with just a magnet, but a grappling hook lets you catch non‑magnetic stuff and helps with big pulls like bikes or safes. Two people can pull together by looping the hook through the rope carabiner.

Does the protective cover reduce the magnet's power?

The protective cover is engineered thin and the bottom stays exposed. You won’t notice a difference in power. Covers are included for free with every Bondi Magnet.

Is my climbing rope good for magnet fishing?

It’s probably strong enough, but climbing ropes soak up water and can knot permanently. Bondi Heavy Duty ropes are water‑repellent, have carabiners on both ends, and are easy to untie after a day in the water.

My magnet is chipped?

Neodymium is powerful but fragile. Our magnets come pre‑assembled with a protective cover to reduce impacts. Chips can happen and won’t affect magnetic strength.

I'm missing the golden cover?

It’s already on your magnet. The gold‑coloured outer layer is the protective cover.

What's included with the magnet?

All magnets include: Golden Bondi Magnet Cover, Durable Waterproof Gloves, Bondi Extra Tough XL Bucket, Foam Travel Cover, Pre‑assembled, Loctite. We recommend at least one Heavy Duty rope and a grappling hook. A budget‑friendly kit is a great option.

What's included in the kit?

Kits include: a 360º magnet of your choice, 3‑point grappling hook, Heavy Duty Rope 10mm, Golden Bondi magnet cover, Durable waterproof gloves, Bondi Extra Tough XL Bucket, Loctite, Foam travel cover.

Where can I buy merchandise?

Merch is on the roadmap. Keep an eye on the website or sign up for the newsletter for updates.

Can I take my magnet with me on an airplane?

Check with your airline. If allowed, pack it in the original box with the protective cover to minimise magnetic attraction.

How do I apply the Loctite?

No tools needed. Apply the adhesive on the nut and it will seep between the nut and bolt to secure it.

Any tips for unboxing?

Unbox in an open space, away from metal objects, electronics, bank cards, watches, etc.

What risks are there to magnet fishing?

Main risk is getting fingers between the magnet and an object or between two magnets. You can damage surroundings or underwater habitats. Only fish at responsible locations.

What if I find something dangerous or historic?

For firearms or explosives, call authorities immediately. Don’t touch—leave it attached, lower it back, and step away. For historic finds, keep it wet and muddy, inform authorities, and contact a specialist or local museum.

Is magnet fishing bad for the environment?

Magnet fishing helps clean waterways, but be mindful of wildlife and habitats. Balance cleaning scrap metal with not disturbing nature. Check with local authorities to ensure your spot is appropriate.

Do I need a permit?

In most cases no, but it depends on your country, state, and municipality. Always check with local authorities for your spot.

My magnet is stuck, what should I do?

Step back to add distance on the rope. Pull with short, sharp pulls from different angles, ask for help, and bounce using body weight. If it’s still stuck and unsafe to enter the water, use a winch. Always stay safe.

What should I do with the scrap metal I catch?

Take it to a scrap iron dealer for cash or dispose of it properly. Don’t throw it back or leave it on the sidewalk.

Can I go magnet fishing in a river?

Almost any body of water works if it’s safe. Rivers with many boulders and rocks may trap your magnet.

Can I go magnet fishing in salt water?

Salt water accelerates rust on neodymium magnets and can reduce power over time. It also degrades other metals, so it’s not the best place for finds. If you still fish salt water, rinse your magnet with fresh water afterward.

What is the best time to go magnet fishing?

All year is fine. Most people prefer spring and fall when water levels are lower and visibility is better.

Can I keep what I find?

If you think it’s valuable, check with local authorities for how to proceed. Non‑historic scrap or coins are usually fine to keep.
