A grappling hook is the accessory most people buy second, right after they lose something good at the water's edge.

Why you need one

Underwater, your magnet is doing an easy job. The find is partly supported by the water and the pull is straight up. The instant it breaks the surface that changes: the full weight lands on the magnet, and anything awkwardly shaped starts to lever itself off. Bicycles and mopeds are the classic case. They are heavy, they are long, and they will pivot off a magnet exactly when you have got them to the edge.

A three-pointed grappling hook removes the problem. You hook the find, the hook holds mechanically rather than magnetically, and then it is just hoisting. It also lets you recover things that were never magnetic enough to hold in the first place.

L or XL?

  • Bondi Grappling Hook L, 19 cm. The everyday size. Right for most canal and river work, and easier to throw accurately.
  • Bondi Grappling Hook XL, 25 cm. More reach and a wider bite, for deeper water and larger objects like frames and mopeds.

Both use the same three-point design and both clip straight onto any Bondi heavy duty rope.

How to actually use it

Run it on a second rope rather than swapping it onto your magnet line. When you have something heavy at the surface, drop the hook past it, drag back until it bites, then take the weight on the hook and let the magnet come free. Most people who fish regularly end up carrying both a magnet and a hook rigged and ready.

Our 8 mm heavy duty rope is the right pairing for a grappling hook. Packed in Amsterdam, shipped tracked worldwide.
