Frequently Asked Questions
Popular Questions
What is magnet fishing?
As the name suggests, magnet fishing is fishing with a magnet. However, a magnet fisherman does not fish for fish but for metal, hence the magnet ;).
What do you need for this? Mainly a good fishing magnet and a sturdy rope. Once the magnet is securely tied to the rope, you throw the magnet as far into the water as possible. Then you pull in the rope, and discover what the magnet has grabbed. Voila, now you are a magnet fisher!
What is a magnet fishing magnet?
The most important item you need when it comes to magnet fishing is of course a magnet. Fishing Magnets are magnetic on ALL SIDES and this is very important as most magnets are only magnetic on two sides. These one and two-sided magnets are significantly weaker and are not made for magnet fishing, even though they are often advertised as fishing magnets. To enjoy your new hobby and ensure you are going to find treasure, it’s important to get the right magnet as it is the most important piece of equipment after all.
What can you catch?
You can catch anything that’s made of magnetic metal but also many things that get tangled up in metal objects or are hidden inside something metal. You will be amazed just how many non-magnetic things you will find as well metal objects. Coins, bicycles, motorbikes, firearms or even safes! We know people who found jewellery and gemstones in safes they fished up so everything is possible when you’re out magnet fishing, which is what makes this hobby so exciting.
Can you magnet fish with any magnet?
Yes and no. Virtually any strong magnet could be used but the chances of success will be a lot less. For effective magnet fishing, you need a 360 neodymium magnet which is both heavy and powerful. This type of magnet pulls on all sides, so you will find much more and that’s the point, right? All magnets sold by Bondi Magnets are 360 neodymium magnets made especially for magnet fishing.

Why should I get a Bondi Magnet instead of a cheaper one?
Magnet Fishing magnets are a very specific type of magnet. The reason we started Bondi Magnets is because our partner Bondi Treasure Hunter received hundreds of messages from people being disappointed after purchasing a cheap fishing magnet online. Most magnets are just normal magnets that are often sold as magnets for magnet fishing. Don’t waste your time buying a ‘cheap’ magnet as you will only end up like the hundreds of other disappointed people who can’t find anything with their magnet.
All Bondi Magnets equipment and magnets are specifically made for magnet fishing. Our partner and professional magnet fisher Bondi Treasure Hunter has tested all magnets so you can be sure you have the best genuine magnet fishing magnet at the best possible price.
What is a 360º neodymium magnet?
360º magnets pull on all sides of the magnet, which makes it very versatile and perfect for magnet fishing. Neodymium is a rare-earth-metal which is the best material to make magnets from. Neodymium magnets guarantee a strong and constant pulling force without getting weaker over time. In combination, a 360º neodymium magnet is the strongest and most versatile magnet you could use for magnet fishing.
Which magnet is the strongest one?
All Bondi Magnets are made for magnet fishing so they are extremely strong. Our strongest magnet is only suitable for the real magnet fishing pro’s. The Holy Moly magnet is no joke! We did our best to keep even the most experienced magnet fishers excited when we designed our Holy Moly magnet. This magnet is one of the strongest magnet fishing magnets in the world. But mind you, stronger isn't always better.
Is stronger always better?
Not always. Of course the stronger the magnet, the more treasures it can pull from the bottom, and the better it holds onto your catch once you pull it out. But stronger magnets also pull quicker towards metal objects you might not want to catch. Try pulling the El Dorado off a metal bridge, that’s quite a workout!
If you are magnet fishing around large metal objects or unknown waters it’s better to start with a smaller magnet and work your way up. Other times you might know the spot well and want to start using the biggest magnet you have, knowing it wont get stuck. Bigger magnets are great to get items stuck deep in the mud, or even things that are missed by other magnet fishers. You want to enjoy your hobby so it’s good to stick within your comfort zone, especially when starting out. A good all rounder magnet we recommend for adults beginning a new hobby, is the Jackpot magnet.
What does 'combined pull' mean?
To define the strength of a magnet, we use the words ‘direct pulling force’ and ‘combined pulling force’. The direct pulling force is how strong the magnet pulls on one side of the magnet. Since 360º magnets pull on all sides, the direct pulling force is not a perfect indication of its power. With the combined pulling force, we calculate the pulling force on all sides of the magnet into one sum. The combined pulling force is therefore the best indicator of a 360º magnet’s strength.
What does the amount of kg / lbs magnetic strength mean?
The kg / lbs of a magnet describes how strong the magnet pulls in laboratory conditions with all sides of the magnet combined. This doesn’t mean that you’ll be towing up 1000kg treasures with a 1000kg magnet. What we catch is often stuck in the mud and/or rusted over so the magnet won’t attach as what it could on clean metal. And most often you catch items with one or two sides of the the magnet rather than all sides. So the higher advertised strength of the magnet just means that there's a better chance of pulling heavier things out of the water. Bondi Magnets are all made for magnet fishing so no matter what size you choose, you can be sure that it’s going to work great.
Do I really need a grappling hook?
Of course you can catch a lot of treasures with just your magnet. But you can also have a lot of fun using your grappling hook. You can catch some amazing non-magnetic things like jackets and handbags using a grappling hook, so it’s definitely worth getting one. Also when it comes to the big catches like bikes and safes, you and your magnet might need some help. The grappling hook allows two people to pull on an object at the same time, making it much easier to lift heavy objects out of the water. Bondi Magnets heavy-duty ropes have a carabiner on each end, so if the magnet is attached to something, just loop the grappling hook through the carabiner at the other end of the rope to double your pulling power.
Does the protective cover reduce the magnet's power?
We engineered Bondi Magnets protective covers to be as thin as possible while still giving the proper protection. This way you won’t notice any difference between using the magnet with or without a cover. Besides this, the bottom of the magnet is still exposed while using the cover. Our covers are included for free with every Bondi Magnet so you have no reason not to protect your magnet.
Is my climbing rope good for magnet fishing?
Your climbing rope will probably be strong enough to pull your finds out of the water. Though because of how most climbing ropes are made, you will have a soaking wet rope and possibly knots that are in there forever. Bondi Magnet ropes are specially designed for magnet fishing with carabiners on both ends to quickly attach magnets on one end and to secure your rope off on the other end. It also makes swapping a magnet over to the grappling hook a breeze. Our Heavy Duty ropes are made to be water repellent and easy to untie, even after a full day in the water.
My magnet is chipped?
Neodymium magnets are extremely powerful, and at the same time fragile. This is why all our magnets come pre-assembled with the golden protective cover. The protective cover reduces impact on the magnet, lowering the chance of chipping. However, if your magnet hit something hard, it might still chip. This wont affect its magnetic strength though, it’s normal to have some chips after some time using the magnet.
I'm missing the golden cover?
Your magnet is pre-assembled for your convenience, this means the golden protective cover is already on your magnet. Its the gold coloured outer layer of your magnet.
What's included with the magnet?
All our magnets include:

Can I take my magnet with me on an airplane?
If you want to take your magnet with you on your travels, we advice you to contact your airline as they all have different rules and regulations. If you receive the go-ahead, make sure to pack your magnet in the original box with protective cover to minimise the magnetic attraction.
How do I apply the Loctite?
No tools are needed to apply the Loctite. Simply apply the adhesive on the nut and it’ll seep down between the nut and bolt, securing it in place.

Safety Questions
Any tips for unboxing?
Unbox your magnet in an open space and away from metal objects, electronic devices, bank cards, watches, etc.Read more on unboxing your magnet here.
What risks are there to magnet fishing?
The most evident risk of magnet fishing is to get your fingers between the magnet and an object, or worse, between two magnets. Besides this you can damage your surroundings with metal and the strong pulling force of the magnet. You might also damage the underwater world, so only go magnet fishing at responsible locations. Read more on the risks and safety of magnet fishing.
What if I find something dangerous or historic?
If you find something dangerous like firearms or explosives, immediately call the authorities. Don’t play around with your find, even if it seems harmless. Leave it attached to the magnet, lower it back into the water, and take distance from your find until the authorities arrive.
Regarding historic finds: If you feel that you caught a valuable historic find, it’s best to keep your find wet and muddy, like how it was preserved before you found it. Inform the authorities and contact a specialist or local museum as soon as possible. Neglecting proper care for your historic find can quickly ruin it forever.
Is magnet fishing bad for the environment?
Magnet Fishing is a fantastic hobby that is great for the environment. You will be having fun while cleaning up your local waterways which is something to be proud of as a member of the hobby. Always consider wildlife such as nesting birds in spring, and other natural bodies of water that may be harmed by magnet fishing. There’s always a balance between cleaning up the water from dirty scrap metal, and disturbing the underwater world. Even old iron can be the habitat of some species! Therefore our advice is to always check in with the local authorities to make sure your magnet fishing spot is the right one.

Make sure to check outBondi Treasure Hunter on youtube for some great catches.
Do I need a permit?
In most cases you don’t need a permit to go magnet fishing, but this severely depends on your country, state and municipality. Always check your spot with the local authorities so you don’t run into problems later.
My magnet is stuck, what should I do?
It happens to the best of us, the magnet gets stuck. Step back and allow some distance on the rope. Try pulling with short and sharp pulls, try different angles, ask others for help, and bounce with the rope using your body weight. Is your magnet still stuck and it’s not safe to go into the water? Try using a winch. Make sure you’re safe at all times.
What should I do with the scrap metal I catch?
Either bring it to the scrap iron dealer and earn some cash, or dispose of it in the usual proper way in your area. Whatever you do, don’t throw it back and don’t leave it on the sidewalk. This way we keep our nature and streets clean for everybody.
Can I go magnet fishing in a river?
Almost any body of water is good for magnet fishing, you just have to make sure your area is safe. If a river has a lot of boulders and rocks, your magnet might get stuck behind them without the possibility to retrieve it.
Can I go magnet fishing in salt water?
Fishing magnets and salt water are not the biggest friends. Salt water causes neodymium magnets to rust faster, and can over time can cause a decrease in power. Having to avoid salt water is not a big problem though, cause it’s probably not the best spot to catch your treasures anyways! See, salt water doesn’t only degrade your magnet, but also the other metals on the bottom. The old coins you were looking for have probably been eroded a long time ago. If you still want to go magnet fishing in salt water, make sure to give your magnet a proper rinse with fresh water once you’re finished.
What is the best time to go magnet fishing?
Although you can go magnet fishing all year round, most magnet fishermen prefer spring and fall. That's when water levels are a little lower and visibility is better. But we won’t say no to a little magnet fishing session in the late summer sun! ;).
Can I keep what I find?
If you’re looking for the answer to this question, there’s a high chance you found something valuable. In this case it’s best to check in with the local authorities, they will tell you how to proceed. In case you found a beautiful piece of scrap metal or some non-historic coins, sure you can keep those :).
