Beginner’s Guide to Gear, Locations and Safety

How Do I Start Magnet Fishing? (Beginner’s Guide)

Ready to start magnet fishing but not sure where to begin? Don’t worry, it’s way easier than it looks. Magnet fishing is one of the most exciting outdoor hobbies out there, and the best part is that anyone can do it without any experience needed.

At Bondi Magnets, we’ve helped thousands of people around the world get started, and in this beginner’s guide we’ll walk you through exactly what you need, where to go, and how to do it safely.

Step 1: Get the right gear

You don’t need much to start magnet fishing, you just need the right magnet and gear.

Here’s your basic setup:

  • Magnet: This is the main tool you’ll use to pull metal objects from the water. For families and younger explorers, our Nugget Magnet is lightweight, strong and super fun. For adults who want a bit more pulling power, check out the Jackpot Magnet or Bondi Gold Magnet, the perfect all-round magnets with strong performance. The El Dorado and Holy Moly magnets are for anyone who’s a more experienced magnet fisher.
  • Rope: Choose a waterproof, non-stretch rope that’s strong enough to handle heavy finds. Bondi Magnets ropes are specially designed for magnet fishing with high quality stainless steel carabiners on both ends so no knots are required to attach your magnet. These ropes are incredibly strong and durable and can handle any adventure.
  • Gloves: Always wear gloves to protect your hands from rust and sharp edges. A free pair of waterproof Bondi Magnet gloves come with every Bondi Magnet.
  • Bucket: Ideal for keeping your finds together and your gear organised. An indestructible Bondi Magnets bucket is also included for free with every Bondi Magnet.

If you want everything ready to go from the beginning, we highly recommend starting with the complete magnet fishing kits. The Bondi Magnets Kit includes all the essentials to get started; A magnet, rope, grappling hook, protective cover, travel cover, gloves, and indestructible bucket.

Step 2: Find a good location

Where you magnet fish can make a big difference. The best spots are places where people have likely dropped or thrown metal in the water over time. Try magnet fishing around:

  • Bridges and canals in busy towns
  • Piers, docks and boat ramps
  • Historical sites or older waterways (Tip: use old maps!)
  • Parks and walking paths near water

Just make sure the area is safe and that magnet fishing is allowed.

Step 3: Set up and start exploring

Once you’ve found your spot, attach your magnet securely to the rope and tie your rope on a bridge, pole, or anything close to you. Drop or throw your magnet into the water and slowly pull it back up. You’ll feel a pull when it connects to something metal, and that’s when the fun begins. Keep in mind some smaller finds like iPhones aren’t noticeable when they attach to your magnet, so take it slow.

Always lift carefully and keep your fingers away from the magnet’s surface, as it’s very strong. Be aware of any metal surroundings and other magnets to prevent accidents.

Step 4: Clean and store your finds

When you find something interesting, give it a rinse and decide whether to keep, recycle or dispose of it. Magnet fishers help clean up waterways by removing old metal waste, so you’re doing something great for the environment while having fun. Make sure to share your cool finds on instagram and tag @BondiMagnets, we love seeing your treasures!

Step 5: Stay safe

Magnet fishing is safe when done with a bit of care. Remember to:

  • Always wear gloves
  • Avoid standing too close to the edge
  • Stay away from strong currents or deep water
  • Never try to pull up dangerous items
  • Contact local authorities if you find weapons or anything suspicious
  • Keep a good distance from other magnet fishers.
  • Always store your magnet properly when not in use.

Step 6: Enjoy the adventure

That’s it, you’re ready to go magnet fishing. The more you do it, the better you’ll get at finding good spots and spotting interesting objects. Every trip is different and every pull could reveal something amazing.

So grab your magnet, find your spot and start exploring. Who knows what’s waiting just beneath the surface?
