How Do I Start Magnet Fishing? (Beginner’s Guide)

Step 1: Get the right gear

You don’t need much to start magnet fishing, you just need the right magnet and gear.

Step 2: Find a good location

Where you magnet fish can make a big difference. The best spots are places where people have likely dropped or thrown metal in the water over time. Try magnet fishing around:

• Bridges and canals in busy towns
• Piers, docks and boat ramps
• Historical sites or older waterways (Tip: use old maps!)
• Parks and walking paths near water

Just make sure the area is safe and that magnet fishing is allowed.

Step 3: Set up and start exploring

Once you’ve found your spot, attach your magnet securely to the rope and tie your rope on a bridge, pole, or anything close to you. Drop or throw your magnet into the water and slowly pull it back up. You’ll feel a pull when it connects to something metal, and that’s when the fun begins.
